Final Essay Response

These days, being capable of utilizing emerging technologies well is the key to getting a good job right out of school. This is my reasoning for wanting to further my education by learning more about programs such as Flash and FinalCut Express as well as being fully functional in web development.

I know that I need to be educated in these areas because I have been trying to get an internship and the career paths I would like to go down require knowledge in these programs. Without this knowledge I am unemployable. I know this for a fact because I have applied for internships and been turned down multiple times because of my lack of knowledge in these areas.

Graphic Communication provides useful information for those who want to go into the world of print. Though, it is evident that they add in new material to classes to try to bring them up to date with emerging technology. I appreciate that I can design something that can print easily and well on a press, though, I am not educated as a designer, I am educated in the broad major or Graphic Communication. I wish that there were more emerging technologies classes available to build my knowledge in these areas so I can apply them in the work place. Just learning small bits of new technology doesnít help me. I donít have a lot of time outside of school to go learn these programs on my own. Educating GrC students in emerging technologies is crucial and, in my opinion, needs to be part of every students required courses just as printing processes are. How can our department have a class for every different printing process and there isnít one class dedicated to Flash or more advanced web design classes? I think bringing these new programs into the GrC Department could do nothing but benefit the students. Our department needs to naturally shift as the times do. Print isnít dead. Itís true that it does keep up with the times to a degree, by evolving, but why neglect these new developing technologies when educating students in these topics can do nothing but help their careers?

The department has noticed an incredible shift of studentsí interest toward the DRT concentration. This shift is because, out of all the GrC concentrations, DRT is the closest you can get to web development and new technologies. A month ago I considered trying to change concentrations to DRT but was told that it wasnít likely I would be able to get in because it was so full. Since several weeks ago, unfortunately for anyone who didnít initially have that concentration, there is no possibility of getting in now that switching concentrations within GrC is prohibited.

I know that our professors want what is best for the students. It is clear though, that the technology is moving quickly and it is difficult for professors to know the new technology well enough to teach. There are roadblocks deterring older professors from learning new technologies. There isnít enough time to teach their classes while learning new technologies so they teach what they know, older information. I think the solution would be to bring in younger teachers who know these newer programs to supplement the other teachers. I realize the issue with hiring new teachers is Ďwhere will the funding come from?í, but I believe it is the only way to move forward. With the new budget cuts campus wide, it will be impossible to expand the department presently. There isnít a definite time when the GrC Department will have funding back, but it would certainly be in their best interest to invest in new teachers who can help the department get up to speed with new technology. The demand is certainly there.

It is frustrating for me that these classes arenít offered because I see myself graduating from GrC in the next year and being forced to go to another school to learn these important programs. Hearing about other programs at junior colleges that offer Dreamweaver classes, Flash, and related video classes makes me think that our department needs to do a lot of work to catch up to other schools. Our program needs to be revamped to appeal to a broader range of students. Students no longer are intrigued primarily because the GrC department offers printing classes but because they offer technology classes too. It seems a little tricky that it seems there are more technology classes; only they never get very deep into the subjects they are teaching. Also, it is disappointing that there are very few intermediate or advanced classes offered for many classes. I think all students could benefit from these extensions of classes being offered.

Classes like GrC 452 Graphics in Motion make going to school more exciting for me. Itís a breath of fresh air to get to take part in working with new technology. It is disappointing that other related classes canít be found in the department. I think that with funding and faculty interest the department could really bring in some fun new technology classes.

UGS Promotional Video

OBJECTIVES

The objective of creating the UGS promotional video was to allow us to use our knowledge that weíve accumulated from the first week of class and put together a quality promotional video.

PROCEDURES

In order to create the UGS promotional video we first needed to look at the provided video and logo. I started by incorporating the logo into the intro of the video. Then I started to bring down the interview portion of the video. It was challenging to edit but really made me feel like that is what industry must have to deal with. Some video just isnít going to be easy to edit. I chose several parts of the video and set them into the timeline. I then pulled down the video of the pressroom and office into the timeline. I chose several clips from that video and drug them to another layer on the timeline. I decided it was time to bring down the audio to the timeline and see how the audio from the interviews and the music would mesh. I had to do a fair amount of altering to both audio tracks. The music was too loud and some of the interviewees were too quite and too loud. Once these aspects of the video were set I focused on how to make the different interviewees flow from one clip to the next. It was challenging and I donít feel like I did it the right way. I feel that there is something else I could have done to make it flow more effortlessly. Next I focused back on the intro logo. I wanted the animation to be catchy in some way but I found it difficult at first because I was having permission issues and I couldnít render it. Eventually it got worked out and the intro was done. The last thing to do was the final touch on the end of the video. I wanted there to be some sort of climatic ending or at least a memorable one!

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

This project showed me that video projects could be hard. I didnít find this project as easy as the others, perhaps, simply because it wasnít as exciting and new as the others. Working with the video clips was challenging because there wasnít a whole lot of time to work with. I barely got enough video interviews to work with. A lot of an interview was good only it didnít have high enough quality of audio so it couldnít be used.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

The UGS promotional video was significant in that it taught me how to take clips of a video and edit it piece by piece. This project took me a very long time to complete. I just wasnít satisfied with my project and was trying to tweak it and tweak it. Iím not sure if I even like it now.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

This project was beneficial because it challenged me to work harder to produce a video I was happy with.

WiHire Splash Intro Project

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this week's lab was to create a splash intro for video hosting that the local company Wihire is looking for. Each student will create their own splash intro incorporating key elements that are needed for Wihire's branding. These things include the logo and other related elements.

PROCEDURES

First I began my splash intro by drawing up a quick sketch to see how I would like the logo to be incorporated into the splash. Since the logo is a key element, I wanted it to have an interesting animation to catch the viewers eye immediately(the goal of a splash intro). The logo was provided to us along with a website we could pull ideas from and a flier in pdf format. I used the photoshop design and took parts, saved each element separately, then imported them into Final Cut Express. I animated them and then decided to go look for music since that was suggested in order to make the rest of the splash flow well with the beat of the music. I chose an audio clip with a quick beat. I felt that this audio clip suited the splash well since the splash would ultimately only last 8 seconds. I imported the audio track and went from there. I looked at the website and pdf for more direction. I decided to pull bold words from the pdf, which I felt were important features the website provided to it's customers. I put each one into Final Cut Express and animated them each to come in from different sides, fade in then slide back out with the logo for WiHire still in the background with lower opacity.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

Creating the splash intro really inspired me and made me more excited about using Final Cut. I feel that having a real life project to complete with high expectations really drives students to want to achieve more.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

With no few defined guidelines I felt creative freedom in designing a splash. I hadnt' ever created one before but I really felt myself trying exceedingly hard to make the best video I could. I had fun doing this project too. I didn't feel stressed about it I simply felt excited that it was turning out so well. I really enjoyed this project!

CLOSING THOUGHTS

This project was fun because it was such a short project. The elements required in it were very vague whic made it more interesting, but every element counted. It was interesting having to consider what was important enough to put into an 8 second clip. I ultimately gave a large portion of the time to the logo animation. The following highlight points were not as important to me so I made them come in and out of the screen quickly.

Flash Video Creation Project

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this week's lab was to introduce us to creating flash video animation using a premade Adobe Photoshop image.

PROCEDURES

We began in flash by opening a new document. Then we went into Photoshop and grabbed the background image for our aniation. We imported it into Flash and typed in the text for the advertisement. We Put each line of text onto a different layer so that the effects we put on each line would be different. We programmed each line to come in to the image area from different angles. We were referring to a premade advertisement so we wanted to make sure all of the text was the correct color match and in the correct position on the canvas. We then coded in all necessary coding to make the animations work and also to stop the animation from looping.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

This project was somewhat overwhelming but that is the way most prgrams are initially. It was slightly hard to folloT the process because if I got lost on one step It was hard to catch up quickly. the breaks helped though. I really wish we could have longer periods of time to really work on these projects but there simply isn't enough time.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

This project was a very important in teaching basic animation from predesigned work. It really did a good job of introducing me to some of the capabilities of Flash.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

I am really glad that I gt this introduction into Flash animation. It really makes me want to look into Flash more. I can see the use for it on any website. The examples of what the teacher could do with Flash in his work was very interesting.

Flash Player Creation Project

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this week's lab was to introduce us into Adobe Flash CS3. We started off learing how to make Flash video players.

PROCEDURES

We started in Flash by importing our finished Ipod Video. Then we moved on to premade flash players. Then we learned how to bring parts from other players and make them our own by customizing the colors and placement of the buttons in the player. When this was done we made a background box for our video on which we would place our buttons. Once we placed the buttons in their chosen spots, we learned to code so that the buttons would function as they should. Once the coding was complete we tested the code to make sure that it worked.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

This project's goal was to introduce us to the general flash player creation. It was more of an overview than anything in detail. It really made me want to learn more. I hadn't expected Flash to be what it was... I had thought it was more of an animation program. I didn't know that you could make video players so easily though, thats for sure!

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

This project was a very important stepping stone for me as I was very interetsted in the program and bought several books to learn this program recently. Now I feel confident enough to jump into them and learn more.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Flash seems easy, but complicated at first. I think it will continue to get easier to understand thugh;I hope! I want to see what else I can do in Flash other than video player creation.

Ipod Commercial Video Project

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the Ipod COmmerical Project is to expand our knowledge of final Cut Express by recreating a commerical, but at the same time adding in our special touches.

PROCEDURES

With the provided video of dancers in front of a green screen we were able to separate the dancers from the background to make the background a solid color and the dancer another solid color. From the color aspect of the design I chose to make the background shift colors though the spectrum to make a sort of rainbow effect. Then I noticed that part of the clip I chose the dancer coudn't catch the beat of the music. I found an effect to postitively enghance this part of the clip in an interesting way. Instead of cutting that part out of the video I chose to use it as a point of interest to accentuate th ebeat of the music. From there I altered the msuic as well as the text.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

This project was awesome! I never thought I'd know how a real commerical was made let alone one that was so popular in pop culture. I never understood how green screens works but this lab really helped me understand the purpose and importance of the technique.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

This project was a very important building block for us to learn about green screens. Knowing key concepts like the process of green screening is something i don't think I would have lerned anywhere else.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

I had a great time working on this project! I felt a lot of creative freedom in this. I only wish I had more time out of class to work on it! There is never enough time to play with all the fun things there are to work with.

Creek Day Video Project

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the 'Creek Day' video assignment is to get aqainted with Final Cut Express as well as make a legitimate video advertisement. To learn how to combine audio, video, and images with effects to have a final advertisement.

PROCEDURES

We began our project by getting familiar with the clips of audio and video that were provided. We then drug each clip down to the 'Sequence' bar where we drug clips of both audio and video. Once we arranged our clips in the right places, we could edit the duration or parts of each clip to capture the parts of the video clip we wanted to use. Then we did the same with the audio so that the audio would last as long as the video. We had two parts of audio: the spoken advertisement and background music. The spoken advertisment was the full 30 seconds, the complete duration of the advertisement. The other audio clip wasn't. In this case I took two clips of that audio and edit the second one so that it would flow smoothly from the first audio clip so it didn't sound hacked. Then when the video was edited correctly and the audio was too, I inserted effects between the video clips to fade them in and out. After the very last clip I inserted a 'dither'.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS

This project really got me excited about Final Cut Express. It is one thing to go through a program and look at the features, but it is a completely different, more rewarding experience to have a final product completed at the end of each lesson. I especially liked that we uploaded it to Viemeo so I could share what I learned with my friends.

PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

In completeing this project I realized how much I had learned in one three hour lab. I felt that i learned enough to be comforatable enough to look through other effects and other tools in Final Cut Express.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Even I know it will be more fun to work on bigger projects that have more interesting content, I thought that this assignment was a perfect beginner assignment. I came into the second lab not sure if I would be able to keep up on the project, but I left feeling confident enough to want to come into open lab and make my own videos just for fun! Although, I would like to learn how to get other clips imported to Final Cut Express soon.
